T20 World Cup
T20 World Cup- One of the Most Nail Biting Tournaments in the World
The ICC men’s T20 World Cup is a premier tournament organized by the International Cricket Council. The World Cup T20 consists of 16 teams that go up against each other in the grandest stage of the game. It comprises 10 teams who are in the top ten of the World T20 rankings and six teams who are chosen from qualifiers.
T20 World Cup History
- When the Benson & Hedges trophy ended in 2002, the idea of a World T20 was touted and the board was looking at an alternative to one-day cricket that would pull in the younger generation who were getting bored with the tedious nature of the game.
- They wanted something that would be fast-paced, commercial which would secure sponsorships that were on the decline.
- The marketing department of ECB then proposed a 20 over match which then later developed into the T20 World Cup.
Domestic Tournaments
- Before the T20 World Cup gained momentum, the first official matches were competed in England by different counties and provinces in June 2003.
- The first T20 before the WT20 originally happened, took place at Lords and in the first season the team of Surrey Lions beat Warwickshire to become the inaugural T20 champion.
- Soon after this, other cricket boards warmed up to the idea and before the T20 World Cup happened, Pakistan organized the Faysal Bank T20 Cup as a precursor to World T20.
- West Indies, before investing themselves in the World T20, had their version of a domestic T20 competition called the Stanford T20 which was later renamed as the Stanford Super Series. These tournaments were stepping stones to a T20 World Cup.
International Matches
- The first international T20 match before World Cup T20 was played between New Zealand and Australia at Eden Park in Auckland.
- The match did not have the intensity of the T20 World Cup and the players took it casually. The match ended with New Zealand defeats while the players sported frivolous kits.
How T20 World Cup Started?
- In the beginning, it was decided that a T20 World Cup was to be organized every two years and in case it coincided with the one-day World Cup, the World T20 was to be shifted to the previous year.
- The first T20 World Cup was organized in South Africa, which Indian team ended up winning after a scintillating final against Pakistan.
- Kenya and Scotland were initially not a part of the wT20. They had to play a qualifier to be a part of the T20 World Cup which took place in Nairobi.
- It was later decided that there would be a preparatory tournament of sorts to better engage the aspiring teams for the T20 World Cup. The qualifying teams were given a cash prize upon qualifying for the World T20
- In the next T20 WC, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka to become the champions of the next T20 World Cup.
- In the 2010 version of the T20 cricket World Cup, England defeated Australia to win the T20 World Cup.
- In 2012’s edition of the cricket T20 World Cup, West Indies went on to win the World T20 by defeating Sri Lanka. It was here that for the first time, the organizing nation of the T20 World Cup had competed in the finals.
- It was also in this edition of the T20 World Cup that Ireland and Afghanistan had thrown in their hats for the T Twenty World Cup.
- The next T20 World Cup in 2014 was historic in the sense that it allowed for the participation of 16 teams that were to be initially done in the 2012 T20 World Cup.
- It was here that it was finally decided that ten teams would automatically qualify based on their World T20 rankings and six teams will have to take part in the ICC organized qualifier that had to happen in the preceding year for wT20 qualifications.

In case of a tie in a World T20 match, the result of the match would be decided by a super over. In case of a tied score again in the World T20, the winner would be decided by the most number of boundaries. In 2007 India T20 World Cup, the tied match was decided by a bowl-out. This format of a T20 WC, a super over was applied to the 50 over format as well until the boundary count was abolished. It was later decided that the super over format was urged to be repeated until a winner was found out in the cricket T20 World Cup.
T20 World Cup Hosts and Results
The executive board of the ICC gets to decide who will host the T20 World Cup after all the nations have expressed interest in hosting the same. They vote on the deserving candidates. While Bangladesh was asked to host the 2014 World T20, India was asked to host the next T20 World Cup in 2016.
The board of directors also decided that future events would be hosted in nations like the United States of America where cricket is relatively new and gaining popularity, so that the general audience base of the sport increases manifold times.
