How To Play

The Ireland cricket team does the representation of Ireland in all forms of international cricket. Also, Cricket Ireland is considered to be the sport’s regulating body that is involved in organizing the international Ireland team.

They actively participate in all three integral international game forms: T20I, ODI, and Test matches.

Not only that, but they are regarded as the second full member from Europe and 11th full member of the ICC. On 22nd June 2017, they achieved the test status along with the Afghanistan cricket team.

History of Ireland Cricket

It was the 19th century when cricket was first introduced in Ireland. They played the first match in the year 1855. Again in the late 19th century, Ireland toured the United States and Canada. Ireland also hosted cricket matches specifically in opposition to touring sides.

They share the most-watched rivalry with the Scotland cricket team that was customary at the time; they played against each other in the year 1888.

Ireland also made their debut in the maiden first-class match in the year 1902. Also, in 1993, they were designated to the ICC’s Associate membership.

They played their 1st full ODI in the year 2006 against England. Their best performance also made them successfully qualified in the ICC Cricket World Cup held in 2007.

At that tournament, their performance was notable, which included wins against Bangladesh and Pakistan, and a draw against Zimbabwe. This confirmed the ODI status of Ireland.

After that period, they made a record of playing 157 ODIs that resulted in 3 ties, 8 no results, 79 defeats, and 67 victories. In the year 2009, there was the introduction of contracts for players which helped them become a professional team.

They also made qualification in the short format matches, which included the World T20 competition of 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016.

Before gaining the Test status, it was the ICC Intercontinental Cup, in which, Ireland played first-class international cricket. They were the winners four times especially between 2005 as well as 2013.
