Hat-tricks are considered to be a very rare feat in cricket. In the 12 seasons of the IPL, only 16 players have managed to take one. The very first bowler to take a hat trick in IPL is Lakshmipathy Balaji. He represented Kings XI Punjab in the year 2008. He was able to achieve this historic feat against the finalists of that season, Chennai Super Kings.

A Rarity for the Bowlers, A Delight for the Audience

The inaugural 2008 IPL season recorded three hat tricks that were followed by the same number in 2009 as well as the 2017 season. Every season of the IPL has witnessed a hat-trick till now, except the 2015 and 2018 season. Most hat tricks in IPL are recorded in the name of Amit Mishra, whereas the second on the list is Yuvraj Singh.

Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra, the veteran Indian spinner, has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL. He made his debut in 2008 and has played a vital role for Delhi team since.

He has bagged a total of 157 wickets throughout his IPL career. In the list of most wickets taken by bowlers in IPL, he acquires the second position. Amit Mishra is also the record-holder for having the most number of hat tricks in IPL. He has taken three hat-tricks so far, one each for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Deccan Chargers, and Delhi Daredevils.

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh has had a great IPL career and has two hat-tricks to his name in his 12-year long stint. He also holds the record for being the first player to bag two hat-tricks. The Kings XI Punjab player bagged his first IPL hat-trick 2009 against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the second against Deccan Chargers.

Makhaya Ntini

This South African bowler played only in the inaugural season of the IPL. He was a part of Chennai Super Kings and bagged his only IPL hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata. He took a total of 7 wickets in that season.

Ajit Chandila

Ajit Chandila, a student of former Indian spinner Narendra Hirwani, made his IPL debut on 23rd of April, 2012 at Jaipur. He became the first bowler in the 5th season of IPL to take a hat -trick. Chandila dismissed Jesse Ryder, Sourav Ganguly and Robin Uthappa to derail KKR’s innings.

SamuelBadree

Samuel Badree took a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians in 2017, when he took out Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenagahan and Rohit Sharma off consecutive deliveries to finish with 4/9 in his 4 overs.

  • Shreyas Gopal

    Shreyas Gopal is a part of Rajasthan Royals and he became the 16th bowler to take a hat-trick in IPL. He has taken one hat trick in the 12 IPL seasons he has played. He became the 2nd bowler after Sam Curran to bag a hat trick in the 2019 season.

  • Pravin Tambe

    Pravin Tambe made his debut in 2013 and bagged a hat-trick in the 2014 IPL season. He became the second bowler in the IPL to take a hat-trick of 2 deliveries when he got Manish Pandey stumped off a wide delivery and followed it up by wickets of Yusuf Pathan and Ryan zzTen Doeschate off two legal deliveries, to leave the KKR innings in shambles.

    Rohit Sharma

    Rohit was a part of the Deccan Chargers in the 2009 IPL season . He grabbed a hat-trick against MI in that particular season. Rohit Sharma’s Hat-trick became a crucial part of a match-winning spell and destroyed a team he would go on to lead in the future.

    These match-winning hat-tricks were sensational in the times they were taken, enamouring audiences and leaving the opposition in disarray. The T20 format of the IPL in itself is extremely entertaining, and these hat-tricks are like cherry on top of the cake. They add a layer of thrill to the game that is hard to match.
