How To Play

Mumbai Indians is indubitably the most successful IPL team. Their motto, “Duniya Hila Denge Hum,” exactly represents the squad’s aura. They are determined to win and have already won five IPL tournaments for the past 13 years. Even since the beginning of IPL in 2008, the Mumbai Indians team has shown tremendous performance against its competitors.

From ranking at the bottom to consecutively winning IPL (2019 & 2020), the team has come a long way in its decade long run. Reliance Industries fully owns the Mumbai Indians IPL team, and it is the first franchise to cross the brand value mark of $100 Million. They are currently valued at $115 Million (809 crores) after their win at the IPL 2019.

Mumbai IPL TeamB

The Mumbai Indians can be bifurcated into two prominent phases, one with the on and off captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar and another with skyrocketing success under Rohit Sharma. He is the only player who has tasted IPL with two different teams, Deccan Chargers, and Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma has always been praised for leading the team so fiercely. He has led with example as under his leadership, the Mumbai Indians team has won a total of 77 matches out of 127 under

This time around, we are determined to see some fantastic performances by our Mumbai Indians players. During the IPL auction of 2021, the Mumbai Indians owners have boarded some incredible talents to complement the team efficiently. The first Mumbai Indians match is scheduled on the 9th April 2021 with Royal challengers Bangalore in the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, and we surely cannot control our excitement.

Mumbai Indians Owner

The Mumbai Indians IPL team is owned by Neeta Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s wife. In 2007, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) bought Mumbai Indians from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by paying $111.9 million. Mukesh Ambani has been entitled the second most prosperous sports team owner, followed by Steve Ballmer (former Microsoft CEO) in the Forbes list of “The World's Richest Sports Team Owners 2020”. However, last year, he was in the number one position but could not sustain for long due to a sudden RIL shares downfall.

Reliance Industries is the most powerful and profitable company in India. It deals in multiple sectors such as textiles, energy, petrochemicals, retail, natural resources, and telecommunications. The RIL is also the first Indian Company to make over $200 Billion in revenue. Another significant investment made in 2020 by Reliance was to get complete ownership of the IMG-R. It is a joint venture between the Reliance Group and International Management group.  The venture focused on sports marketing, sponsorship, licensing in India. Their primary clients were the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, and various top Indian cricketers.

Last year, specific reports predicted a 20-25% sponsorship revenue cut for the IPL franchises. However, the 2020 champion squad were able to grab the highest sponsorship of 90 crores. A report published by Duffs & Phelps in 2019 saw a potential increase of 8.5% in Mumbai Indian’s brand value, consecutively for four years. The Mumbai Indians team 2020 is also far away from controversies and has shown excellent performance each IPL year, making it a lucrative option for investors.

Mumbai Indians Team History

Mumbai Indians had a rough start in the inaugural year. Sachin Tendulkar was made the captain and was also Mumbai’s player icon. Furthermore, Mumbai Indians’ owners bought some excellent players on the table like Robin Uthappa, Shaun Pollock, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, and Sanath Jayasuriya. Before the tournament could start, Sachin got injured, and the captaincy position was handed over to Harbhajan Singh.

Even then, the squad wasn’t able to sustain and lost four games consecutively. Mumbai Indians players just crawled enough to enjoy a few wins but they couldn’t make it to the semi-finale by just a single point!

In 2009, the Mumbai Indians matches didn’t go well. Shaun Pollock also retired and became the team’s head coach. The squad was shuffled with new players but nothing served to revive its performance. The Mumbai Indians IPL team could only get five wins and were positioned seventh on the team ranking league. This is the lowest the team has got if we compare all IPL years.

Things were much better in 2010; Mumbai Indians won their first eight matches. The utmost magic of Sachin Tendulkar, Saurabh Yadav, Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh, and Malinga began to shower. The Mumbai Indians owners bought Kieron Pollard for $750k. The team reached the finals but was defeated by Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs.

In the same year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) welcomed two new teams, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India. The IPL Governing Council asked all the other groups to retain four maximum players, and the others have to go for the auction. The Mumbai Indians owners retained Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, and Lasith Malinga.

They bought Rohit Sharma, Andrew Symonds, and Munaf Patel in the auction. The Mumbai Indians team kicked off with a great start and won 8 out of 10 matches, but they further suffered three consecutive losses and so they were ranked third on the IPL team ranking. However, Mumbai Indians qualified and won the Champions League 2011 for the first time.

Harbhajan Singh led the Mumbai Indians players in IPL 2012. The team welcomed Dinesh Karthik (Wicketkeeper) and Pragyan Ojha (Bowler), Thisara Perera (Allrounders), R.P Singh (Bowler), and Mitchel Johnson (Bowler). That year, the Mumbai Indians matches didn’t have a great start with Sachin Tendulkar and Mitchel Johnson stepped down due to injury. They won 10 out of 17 games and lost to Chennai Super Kings in the play-offs.

In IPL 2013, Rohit Sharma took over the leadership from Ricky Ponting due to his consistently dropping performance. The IPL Mumbai Indians players started slow, but Dinesh Karthik was there in full form to save the team. There were many ups and downs, but the Mumbai Indians squad won 13 matches out of 19. They were back in the finals with their favorite competitor Chennai Super Kings, and won the IPL trophy with 23 runs.

The Mumbai Indians’ performance significantly dropped in IPL 2014. The team faced a difficult start by losing five of its initial matches. There was a continuous on-and-off in the Mumbai Indians team performance. They lost against all of their major competitors and climbed the rank chart with small steps. The Mumbai Indians matches were remarkable that year; they extraordinarily reached the play-offs beating Rajasthan Royals but lost against Chennai Super Kings.

In 2015, the Mumbai Indians team won the IPL trophy for the second time. Lendl Simons became the star player who made an incredible 540 runs in the entire season. Ambati Rayudu, Rohit Sharma, Simmons, and Keiron Pollard’s batting performance was also appreciable.

The subsequent years were highly amazing to watch as a viewer; in 2016, the Mumbai Indians team came fifth due to its unsettled top order and lost balance when Lendl Simmons got injured. The following year was terrific for the hero squad, where they won IPL 2017 after a nail-biting fight with the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, the Mumbai Indians teams again got stuck in the fifth position and were disqualified for the IPL 2018 playoffs.

In the last couple of years (2019 & 2020), it seems like Mumbai Indians have grabbed a monopoly to win the IPL trophy. They won against Chennai Super Kings (with just one run) and then first-ever IPL finalists, Delhi Capital. It will be exciting to see whether Mumbai Indians 2020 squad will maintain the momentum and hit its hattrick by winning the IPL 2021 Championship.

Mumbai Indians Players

The Mumbai Indians team has always shown excellent performance in all its IPL matches, sure there were sudden drops in some places, but the team has always bounced back fiercely. Last year, the Mumbai Indians players 2020 won against Delhi Capitals, making it the first-ever team to earn five IPL trophies.

There was inconsistency in performance in the first five years, but everything has strongly come together after Rohit Sharma took charge. The Mumbai Indians owners entered IPL auction 2020 with a budget of 13.05 crores, where they bought Nathan Coulter Nile (8 crores), Chris Lynn (2 Crore), Saurabh Tiwary (50 Lakhs), Fabian Allen (50 Lakhs), Mohsin Khan (20 Lakhs), Prince Balwant Rai Singh (20 Lakhs) and Digvijay Deshmukh (20 Lakhs).
