Sam Curran
Samuel Mathew Curran, popularly known as Sam Curran, is an English cricketer who plays for Surrey, the England team and in the IPL with Chennai Super Kings . This stylish England player is the youngest born of former cricketer Kevin Curran who played for Zimbabwe. Sam's brother Tom Curran is also a cricket player and has played both for Surrey and the England team . His other brother Ben Curran is a player in the Northamptonshire team. Sam Curran’s age is 22 years and he was born on June 3rd, 1998. This English Cricketer shares his birthday with Wasim Akram and possesses some of the swing master’s best bowling traits. This left-arm medium-fast bowler has the stance and capability of bringing the ball back into the right-hand batsman and is considered to be gifted. He also bats well and is a left-handed batsman. Curran has always impressed fans with his bowling, which also led him to feature as one of the five breakout stars in Men's Cricket in 2018 compiled by the International Cricket Council. Moreover, he was also chosen by Wisden Cricketers Almanack as one of their five Cricketers of the Year in 2019.

He has represented Surrey at Under-15, Under-17, and Second XI level. When he played for Weybridge in Surrey Championship Premier Division, he managed to grab everyone's attention. His debut for senior T20 matches was against Kent at The Oval on June 19, 2015, when he was only 17 years old. In this match, he bagged five wickets and impressed the ECB selectors and soon made his way into the England Test team.
In his second test match, he was declared the Man-of-the-Match for his excellent all-round performance against India. He managed to get rid of some of the best Indian batsmen in the famed batting line-up with his menacing swing and hit vital runs with the bat to steer England towards victory. Moreover, Sam Curran was also awarded the Man-of-the-Series award for being the most versatile player in the series, contributing 272 runs and 11 wickets, helping England win 4-1. He made every match count and performed exceptionally well on the Sri Lanka tour too.
Sam Curran’s IPL Career
His all-round performances caught the eye of the Kings XI Punjab management and he was bought at the auction for a whopping Rs 7.2 crores. He grabbed a hat-trick in the second match of the 2019 season and repaid the faith shown by the team in him. Sam Curran’s hat trick was against the Delhi Capitals and he became the youngest player to take a hat-trick in the IPL. His bowling performance helped Kings XI budle Delhi Capitals for 152 runs, which they chased with ease. He took the hat-trick in the 18th over of the match, when he first dismissed Harshal Patel, and followed it up by cleaning up Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane with lethal yorkers. He bagged four wickets by giving away only 11 runs in the match.
This England all-rounder came into the limelight through his performances against India in their home test series in 2019. In his first test match, he was also the player of the game as he managed to clean-up the top order in the first innings and then scored a fabulous, counter-attacking 63, which allowed England to put up a decent total on the board after struggling at 87-7 at one point.
Curran played his heart out and became a player to reckon with, which resulted in an increased interest in him from the franchises. His innings of 78 and 46 at Ageas Bowl, which led to England’s victory, caught the cricket pundits’ attention, who couldn’t stop going ga-ga over him.

He was picked by Chennai Super Kings at the 2019 IPL auction for INR 5.50cr, becoming the most expensive English player of the season in the process.
The price tag for Curran was very high because of some stunning performances that caught quite a few people’s attention. He is expected to set the stage on fire and contribute with both bat and ball to ensure CSK win their fourth title.
He played his first match against Mumbai Indians and with his quality of bowling well under pressure, managed to get a wicket by giving away 28 runs in 4 overs. He also filled the void created by Dwayne Bravo’s absence, by making 18 runs off 6 balls when CSK was chasing a score of 162 set by the Mumbai Indians and helped his team register a win.
Chennai Super Kings played their second IPL match against Rajasthan Royals , which they unfortunately lost.
However, Sam Curran became the star of that match and also became a nominee for the Purple Cap , as he took 4/61 in 8 overs at an economy rate of 7.62 in the two matches he has played. He didn't perform well with the bat and it will be interesting to see how he approaches games in the future with regards to his batting.
