Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock is the South African player who has mesmerized the audience with his fearless batting and handy wicket-keeping. He earned cricket pundits’ respect at a very young age when they compared him to two of the greatest wicket-keeper batsmen in the game, Adam Gilchrist and Mark Boucher. Quinton de Kock’s age was just 22 when he established himself in all three formats of the game.

De Kock has proven to be an extraordinary left-handed batsman who can turn the match on its head with his batting and as well as wicket-keeping skills. He grew up playing baseball, but his father convinced him to pursue cricket, and that's how his cricketing career started.

ODI cricket Career

De Kock represented South Africa for the first time in a T20 match against New Zealand in December 2012. Kock made a massive impression in this match by scoring 28 runs off 23 balls while chasing 86 set by New Zealand and took two catches to help his team win. Quinton de Kock made his ODI debut for South Africa in 2013 against New Zealand, and in the second match itself, he was promoted to the opening slot with Graeme Smith.

De Kock was selected for the Pakistan series in 2013, where he scored his maiden ODI century, a match-winning 112 runs on the challenging batting track of Abu Dhabi in the fourth ODI. He played a significant role in South Africa’s  4-1 series victory in the ODI series and 2-0 T20 series victory against Pakistan.

He was awarded his first-ever One Day International Cricket Man-of the Match award in 2013, where he scored 135 runs against India and guided his team to victory. In the second match against Indian team, he scored another century and made a record-breaking opening stand with Hashim Amla and won another Man of the Match award. He again scored a century in the 3rd ODI against India and became the fifth cricketer to score three consecutive ODI centuries. Quinton de Kock was awarded as the Man of the Series for scoring the most runs in the three-match ODI series against India.

De Kock scored crucial runs to help SA win their first-ever ODI series in Sri Lanka. He scored his maiden Test fifty and his 5th ODI century to propel his team to victory. In the 2014 3-match tour to Zimbabwe, De Kock became the quickest batsman to reach 1000 ODI runs along with Sir Viv Richards, Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott. He achieved this milestone in only 21 innings and was also adjudged as the Player of the Series.

For his terrific performances in 2014, his name was selected by ICC for World ODI XI. Quinton de Kock was named as the wicket-keeper of the ODI XI  in 2016-17. He was selected in South Africa's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he scored 305 runs in 8 matches. In 2020, he reached various milestones, like becoming the second-fastest South African player to reach 5000 ODI runs. He also became the second wicket-keeper opening batsman after Adam Gilchrist to score a century in ODIs while captaining.

De Kock’s Test Cricket Career

De Kock made his Test debut in 2014 against Australian team at St George's Oval Cricket Ground, where he scored seven runs and 34 runs respectively in the first and second innings. In a Test Series against England at home in 2016, he scored his 129 runs even after coming to bat at number seven. On the same tour, Quinton de Kock became the fastest cricketer to reach 10 ODI centuries. In 2019, he equaled his highest score of 129, this time against Pakistan in the second Test match. In 2018 and 2019, De Kock became the fastest wicket-keeper to take 150 and 200 test dismissals, respectively, in terms of games. In 2013 IPL player's auction, De Kock was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for $20,000, but he miserably failed to impress the audience with his performance in the season. He was signed by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for Rs 3.5 Crore in IPL 2014 and thus became the highest-paid international wicket-keeper in the player's auction. He played for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) till IPL 2017. In the 2014 auction, he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 2.8 Crore. However, in the 2019 IPL, Mumbai Indians purchased Quinton De Kock and he repaid their faith by becoming the highest run-scorer for them. The crucial knocks played by De Kock throughout the 2019 season led them to victory in the IPL 2019 Final against Chennai Super Kings. Quinton was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1992 and from a very early age, he was interested in playing cricket.
