Jason Roy
Jason Roy is the English cricket team’s pillar in limited-overs cricket, one who has made them gain the number one spot with his contributions. This clean hitter of the ball is a South- African born English cricketer representing the England team in all formats and domestically plays for Surrey County Cricket Club. Domestic Career
Jason Roy started his domestic career with Surrey, debuting on 27 June 2008 against Middlesex Cricket Team in a Twenty20 cup match. He made his debut as a List A player in the NatWest Pro40 League fixture against Yorkshire in July 2008, when he was 18 years old.
Then, in September 2008, Jason Roy was selected for ECB Elite Player Development Squad and took part in the triangular tournament against University Sports South Africa and Marylebone Cricket Club Universities, where he was picked by two of his representative teams for four matches but was not able to perform well and was dropped from the first team.
Jason became a part of the team again in 2010, wherein Surrey’s first T20 match, he made 101 off 57 balls against Kent at Beckham. Furthermore, while playing another game against Leicestershire, he made an unbeaten 76 runs from 65 balls while debuting for Championship matches.
In 2009, Jason Roy was selected to play the Under-19 County Championship at Whitgift School for Surrey against Warwickshire. He scored 129 from 106 balls in the drawn match.
However, Jason grabbed everyone's attention with his spectacular performance in 2014 in NatWest T20 Blast, where he scored 677 runs at an average of 48.35, which was the highest in the competition.
Test Career
Jason Roy made his test debut against Ireland, ahead of the 2019 Ashes series. However, his performance was not up to the mark in the Ashes series as he made runs at an average of 13.75, 31 being his best and was dropped for the final test.
ODI Career
Jason Roy was selected in the English team after the 2015 World Cup, where they performed miserably. He was then chosen to be a part of the New England team for his dashing gameplay as an opener. Jason made his debut in a One Day International against Ireland on 8 May 2015, but it was called off due to rain. Then, Jason was again selected to play against New Zealand in June 2015. However, he didn’t perform well and scored a total of just 79 runs in the 5 match series. Roy played five ODIs against Australia, where he batted well and scored a total of 202 runs, but England lost the series 2-3.
England went to play with the Pakistan team in 2016 but ended up losing the first ODI and Jason Roy was out for a duck. Then, in the second ODI, he made a half-century and contributed to the teams’ win. He failed in the third ODI, but Jason smashed the bowlers all around the park in the 4th ODI, making 102 off 117 balls and took his team to victory.
By then, Jason had become an established part of England’s top order and was included in the team for the tour of South Africa. He scored 48 in the first game and chipped-in other games too, but England lost the series. However, Jason Roy proved himself in many other ODIs by giving some remarkable performances.
T20 Franchise Career
Jason Roy debuted for England against India in September 2014. He was also a part of the England Squad for the 2016 T20 World Cup. Jason struggled with the bat in many of his innings but bounced back every time. In the semi-finals, this quick-hitter made 78 against New Zealand with minimal feet movement and took his team to the finals, which they unfortunately lost.

Jason Roy’s performance in the 2019 ICC World Cup
The 2019 World Cup saw some brilliant performances from this right-handed player.
- In his first match against Pakistan, he reached 3000 ODI runs.
- In the 2nd match, Jason made 153 runs at Sophia Gardens against Bangladesh.
- Jason Roy was not the part for the other three matches due to his injury, but made a stellar comeback against Indian team, scoring 66 runs off 57 balls contributing to the win.

Jason Roy’s IPL Career
This English player joined the IPL tournament during the 2017 season. Jason Roy’s IPL team was Gujarat Lions in 2017, but he pulled out of it to be a part of England’s World Cup preparations for the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, he played three games for Gujarat Lions.
His IPL debut was against Kolkata Knight Riders on 7 April 2017. Delhi Capitals later bought Jason for Rs 1.5 crores. He played five matches where he scored 128 runs at a strike rate of 127.65 and was then released for the 2019 season.
Jason Roy was bought by Delhi Capitals in 2020 as well. But he had to pull out of the IPL due to personal reasons and has been replaced by Daniel Sams. The explosive cricketer went unsold in 2021’s IPL auction and expressed his disappointment on Twitter saying, “Massive shame not to be involved in the @IPL this year but wanted to congratulate all the lads that did get picked up. Especially some of the high rollers. Going to be good to watch.”

Jason was born to Craig Roy and Chonell Roy in Durban, South Africa and has a younger sister Kristan Roy. Elle More is Jason Roy’s wife, whom he married on 7 October 2017. She gave birth to a baby boy born in March 2019.
